Autumn – Pumpkins & Apples

Today is the first day of Autumn. It’s my favorite season. I have always loved the cooler weather, the colors of the trees, the need to cram the outdoorsy things you planned to do in the summer into the last few nice weeks before winter. Now I also love the bounty of fruits & veggies from my garden and those of others, and the canning & preserving that needs to be done with it before it’s all gone.

We’re starting to get local pumpkins at the farmers markets, and we’re roasting, pureeing and freezing the flesh for pumpkin muffins for Holcomb Hollow and  my favorite coffee drink – the Pumpkin Spice Latte! I used to get these at Starbucks but now I know how to make a fantastic homemade version that actually uses pumpkin! The recipe is below.apples sept 14

We’ve also got some lovely organic Honey Crisp apples from Michigan this week – it’s what I use to make our Apple Pie Jam! So, before we delve into major apple peeling and jam-making, I’m spending today appreciating the change of seasons.




PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE (inspired by Lindsey at

  • 1 cup milk or cream (I used almond milk)
  • 1/2 cup strong coffee
  • 3 TB pumpkin puree
  • 2 TB brown sugar (or honey or maple syrup or whatever you want!)
  • 1/2 TB vanilla
  • 1/4 TSP pumpkin pie spice

Heat everything together in a small sauce pan, whisking until the sugar is dissolved.
